Applied Behavior Analysis and Childrenwith Autism : Educational Benefit for FAPE
Park Hye-Jin

Abstract
In the last decade, parents filed an increasing number of due process hearings and court cases requesting applied behavior analysis(ABA) services for their children with autism, with the belief that ABA is the most appropriate education under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act(IDEA). The purpose of this paper is to examine this belief by reviewing the policies, judicial decisions, and research regarding the provision of the ABA. The judicial decisions have been determined in light of educational benefit in LRE, which is based on the evidence from the research. Previous research suggested that ABA interventions were beneficial for children with autism on average, but several methodological limitations precluded definitive conclusions. In addition, the tension between the least restrictive environment(LRE) provision and over 40 hours per week of program intensity required by ABA programs was another issue that arose. Finally, recommendations for future research and policies were discussed.
